Hi, my name is Janalee. I am a passionate director with an interest in multicultural voices with narratively intriguing layers. I have worn many different hats during my years of working for creative agencies, retail brands, and indie film crews. During my career, I’ve honed creative skills as a graphic designer, art director, editor, post-production supervisor, AC, and camera op, which have all contributed to my style as a director. My passion and primary focus now is directing. My previous positions have taught me how to fully support my crew and how to utilize everyone’s strengths to weave together the most compelling version of a story as a collective. I love collaborating with curious creatives who push each other to be extraordinary. Currently, I am drawn to human-led stories that focus on unique perspectives, flawed characters, and diverse cultural experiences. My first narrative short, GRANDMA LEE’S DRESS, was a finalist in CBC’s Short Film Face Off (season 16) and can be viewed on CBC Gem. I have recently finished production on a new short, THE KNITTING DIARIES, with support from Telus, Storyhive, Creative BC, and the National Screen Institute of Canada. It has just started its festival run and won Best Acting Ensemble and the People’s Choice award at its first screening. I’m hoping to develop it into a TV series one day. If you have a creative project that you want to collaborate on, or if you want to know more about my projects, I would love to hear from you.
Be curious, be kind, and always listen deeply.
Janalee
